The Danseries anciennes by John Craton is a composition originally written for mandolin orchestra. It was composed at the behest of the Dutch mandolin Chamber Orchestra Het CONSORT and dedicated to Marianne Timmerman-Hollander and her husband Alex Timmerman, founder and conductor of the orchestra. The Danseries anciennes is a concert suite based on Medieval Dances of France. In total there are five dances; Estampie, Pavane et Gaillard, Basse dance et Tourdion, Carole et Bransle gay and Piva. Here in Part I you will hear the first two movements, the 'Estampie' and 'Pavane et Gaillard'.
Finished composing on August 23, 2008, the Danseries anciennes was premiered on September 18th 2009 by Het CONSORT in the Saint Nicolas Church in Bancigny, France. The French public, who indeed felt connected with their musical heritage, applauded the composition with great enthusiasm!
With the Danseries anciennes John Craton again proved to be a wonderful composer for mandolin orchestra! Surely many orchestras around the World will play the Danseries anciennes!
