great!! a north Indian song in the golden record!!

While the song's meaning is found in a north Indian language, this tune was appropriate not just for that reason. This tune is one of the most important Indian ragas, called Bhairavi (kind of a scale, but with rules. this particular one uses 12 notes, and has various rules for ascent and descent). It's played in South Asia, and under various names, upto Arabia. It's been played in various similar forms for at least 1500 years, even in medieval Europe. So yeah, it truly represents humanity.

I really hate how people rag on other cutures music. What else would you rather send? personally id rather send traditional, classical, and emotional music from all cultures rather than anything produced electronically. we arent showing off our nations and society in the western world with this record, we're showing off the human race as a whole. Thats why Sagan chose these kinds of songs predominantly, rather than what one western person calls good.
