MANTEC's LEAN Development Manager, Mark Robertson explains the benefits and process for Value Stream Mapping. www.mantec.org

Hello, My name is Mark Robertson with MANTEC. Value Stream Mapping helps a company to identify what is value added in their organization and what is Non-value added. Typically in most companies in the US 95% of lead time is NVA.

Lean helps you to Identify the 8 Wastes, defects, overproduction, waiting, non-utilized people skills, transportation, inventory, motion & extra processing.

After you identify the waste in your value stream, you will select which tool to help eliminate the waste. Under the roof of Continuous Improvement, there are many tools. VSM are the steps leading into the house.

Visualize your product's path is it similar to the one shown. I think that you will find in your current process, there could be many different wastes, including the ones of transportation and motion.

A Team will go to the office and shop floor and gather the data. The data consists of information and material flows. From this data a Current state map is created and the non-value added wastes are identified. We then look for ways to improve the flow.

In our Future state, we have eliminated wastes and streamlined our flow. To get to this point, we have picked our tools to use and decided on which Kaizen events have the highest priority. These are projects to make things better.

Our future state map when all Kaizens are completed will then become the next current state condition. From the eyes of the customer, we have improved on-time delivery, shortened lead times and improved product quality.
