Transgender is the state of one's "gender identity" (self-identification as woman, man, neither or both) not matching one's "assigned sex" (identification by others as male, female or intersex based on physical/genetic sex). "Transgender" does not imply any specific form of sexual orientation; transgender people may identify as heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, pansexual, polysexual, or asexual; some may consider conventional sexual orientation labels inadequate or inapplicable to them. The precise definition for transgender remains in flux, but includes:
"Of, relating to, or designating a person whose identity does not conform unambiguously to conventional notions of male or female gender roles, but combines or moves between these."
"People who were assigned a sex, usually at birth and based on their genitals, but who feel that this is a false or incomplete description of themselves."
"Non-identification with, or non-presentation as, the sex (and assumed gender) one was assigned at birth."

I feel like due to ideas of gender roles and how humans shun things and people who are out of tradition or our idea of ordinary, that it often makes it hard for people to use the basic common sense that embraces and encourages humanity to allow transexual (transgendered individuals) the right to live lives as openly and freely as the rest of us do. Due to issues like this one, trans men and women often face harsh discrimination finding employment, health benefits, housing and familial acceptance. Add the barrier of color, and it presents an entirely different set of issues. We address those things in this piece, through the direct expressions of transgendered women of color.

  • It is sad to see people of color oppress and degrade other people of color. People who are against the oppression of people of color talk about ending white privilege and racial hatred but they are more than happy to use their heterosexual and or male privilege to threaten and abuse others.
