This is what a pinion bearing sounds like when it starts going bad. The jeep is a 2005 CRD liberty limited.

  • Thanks for the video. My Dodge van is making the same noise and I suspected the pinion bearing. Now I'm that much more certain. I'd love to see that video of you removing the bearing. That's next on my list and I too have a torch. Thanks.

  • @RobbyWorld1 The link to the video of us taking the bearing off is in the box above now. just added it.

  • Glad it help you out. I have a video with the diff all open up and us using a gas torch to get the bearing off. But I never got around to uploading it.

  • I have a 2003 liberty nv 241 command trac with the orig. drive train. It's got 190,000 miles and almost all of them were spent in 2wd. When I put it in 4wd and accelerate to about 40, there is an awful moaning noise. I can't tell where it comes from but it is loud. Note - I do not beat it and I change the diff and trans. case fluids according to Jeep's sched. I also did not run 4wd on dry pavement and made every effort to not cut the steering wheel hard when in 4wd on dirt (to avoid bind up).

  • Man thank you so much for this upload, this saced my time and money as well!

  • you just saved me about 1500 bucks

  • Thanks for uploading. I've had this kind of grinding in my 2001 cherokee sport for some time and my mechanic was telling me it could be the differential which could be a $800-$1,000 fix. Glad to know it's mostlikely the pinion bearing because that shouldn't cost nearly as much.

  • Thanks!!! this was a huge help in figuring out my mystery sound on my 07 Durango!!!
