This is to encourage ANYONE to make cage comforters for shelter animals. It gives the animals so much security and happiness, and can even help them to get adopted, because they feel more at ease. The sewing can be done by hand or machine, and the result does not have to be perfect ... the animals love them no matter what! You can also make them as pet comforters for your own pets, but it is especially nice if you contact your local shelter and ask them if they can use "cage comforters," and even ask them if they prefer a certain size.
Steps to Making Cage Comforter:
1. Make "pillowcase"
- Measure (allowing for seam, suggest 1/2")
- Cut fabric
- Sew seam(s), fabric inside-out, so that 3 sides closed
- Be sure to HEM open end (prevent unraveling of fabric)
- Turn right side out
2. Cut batting to fit pillowcase
3. Stuff "pillowcase" with batting
4. Sew "pillowcase" closed (on right side, along open end)
5. Tack batting in place (see video)
6. Clean up loose threads, etc.
Batting comes in different thicknesses - Suggested: about 1/2" thick (Called "6 oz." or "8 oz." - either of these is good)
Some suggested finished sizes for cage comforters
(Be sure to allow 1/2" for seams, and allow for puffiness of batting)
Small: 12" x 16" (kittens, small cats)
Medium: 16" x 20" (average cat)
Large: 19" x 22" (large cat), 24" x 32" (medium dog)
