MACOMB, Ill. - Dre Gibbs and the Fighting Leathernecks were able to come within four points in the second quarter, but the No. 8 Salukis were able to rattle off 16 unanswered points to secure a 30-10 win over Western, Saturday.

Down 14-3 at the start of the second quarter, a pair of Gibbs seven-yard rushes combined with a pair of short runs by Josh Gabelmann set up Western with a second and goal attempt. Gibbs rushed for the Leathernecks (1-3, 0-1 MVFC) only touchdown of the game on the following play to cap off a 13 play and 74 yard drive, taking 5:56 off the clock.

After the touchdown, Matt Barr did not return to the field as he was forced to the sideline with injury and Wil Lunt filled the quarterback role for the remainder of the game.

On the Salukis (3-1, 2-0 MVFC) following drive, Brandon Kreczmer recorded the second sack of his career on third and six for no gain, which forced a 43-yard field goal attempt that Kyle Dougherty pulled out to extend the lead to 17-10.

The Salukis recorded an additional touchdown and field goal to take a 27-10 lead into halftime.

Dougherty hit his second 43 yarder of the night in the third quarter to secure the 30-10 victory. Kyle Glazier had his second-straight game recording an interception as he grabbed Chris Diekers pass, but the Leathernecks were unable to capitalize on the drive. Both teams were scoreless in the fourth quarter.

Southern Illinois held Western on its first drive of the game and was the first on the scoreboard as Deji Karim ran a school record 92-yard kick return in for a touchdown.

Buddy Dudczak recorded his second sack of the season halfway through the first quarter, resulting in a forced fumble, the first of his career, that gave Western its first scoring drive ending in a successful 30-yard field goal by Brian Egan, 7-3.

The Salukis held the Leathernecks to 243 total offensive yards, while recording 368 total yards. Southerns 214 total rushing yards was led by Karim with 157 yards on 18 carries (282 all-purpose yards). Western had 103 rushing yards with Gibbs recording 88 yards on 20 carries.

Glazier led Westerns defensive efforts with eight tackles, one for loss and one interception that he returned for 16 yards. Tim Franken, Abe Koroma and Dudczak each added five tackles.
