During the winter of 1777-1778, the Continental Army under the leadership of George Washington chose their winter quarters in the frozen hills of Pennsylvania at Valley Forge. Here, they had a strategic highpoint and could keep an eye on the British army camped out in Philadelphia. These were difficult months for the Continental army as many soldiers froze or starved to death, Thousands died or fled camp. The log cabins displayed in this video littered the hills of valley forge to provide much needed shelter for the soldiers and families. Forunately, throughout the winter, Washington hired Baron Von Steuben to train the soldiers. By the spring of 1778, what appeared to be a n army in disarray was now a fine fighting force ready to confront the British army.
