It's Hippo Happiness all weekend long!
To kick off our Spotlight on Hippos for the months of October and November, the Calgary Zoo is excited to celebrate the birthday of its oldest resident Foggy the river hippo who turned 46 on Saturday, September 17th. Foggy is one of the oldest hippos in captivity in North America. Born at the Houston Zoo in 1965, Foggy was transferred to Calgary nine months later on May 19, 1966.
The celebrations will kick off with some VERY special guests!
Members of The Calgary Stampeders will toss the ceremonial watermelons to Foggy for some pre-game rivalry in anticipation of the Saskatchewan Roughriders game on Saturday, October 1st at 2pm. Watermelon is Foggy's favourite treat. Watch him squash. Watch him eat.
To kick off the Spotlight theme and the celebration of Foggy's birthday
Party Activities will include:
· Watermelon candy station
· Hippo party games/colouring pages
· Hippo touch table and talks
· Giant card for signing
· Activities last all weekend long
Foggy was named by the keepers for the bellows he made shortly after his arrival. He has sired seven offspring during his time at the Calgary Zoo. His long time keepers Mona and Bill have worked with him for a long time, tending to his needs especially in his geriatric years. He is an example of the exemplary care the animal care staff at the Calgary Zoo provide their animals, especially in their tricky aging years.
I like the part with the watermelon.
