1998. The Playstation was king. Sony was feeling cocky. Using artists from Ren & Stimpy, they created Blasto. In one of the first successful attempts to do so, Blasto employs celebrity voice talent - the late, great, Phil Hartman, voices Captain Blasto.
Despite a towering mountain of hype, Blasto was a case of style and glamour over substance. The game was beautiful by Playstation standards, but frusterating difficult to play. Perhaps Sony Interactive wanted the game to be difficult, much like Ninja Gaiden and Devil May Cry 3 are for today's gamers, but Blasto's controls were nowhere near responsive enough for this, and numerous jumping puzzles combined with Blasto's stubby jumping height mean many jumps are difficult to make - add on to all of that endlessly respawning enemies - and lots of frusterating, unnecessary deaths are to follow. The game was panned by critics and not well accepted.
In it, you play as Blasto, a wise cracking space captain who goes around the galaxy saving babes from aliens. A sequel was planned, but when Hartman died, it was canceled.
The framerate craps out in spots because I played this via emulation, and it was streaming content from the disc.

everyone would agree with me that this game was ahead of its time.can u imagine having Blasto having the graphics/technology we have now-man.great gm nonetheless bring back old ps days in elementary
I think I would have to agree too, Xerxes20xx. I think they should release this game as a PS1 classic too on the PSN for download play or something like that on both the PS3 and PSP systems. That would be so awesome. I'm surprised they haven't released this game yet on PSN either, but it would probably be amazing if they ever would have done that soon. That'll be so cool. :)
Yeah. I know too, fawfulmark2. That was too bad that it had to end that way though. Troy McClure was so awesome too. I liked him from The Simpsons and I knew that Phil Hartman was the voice actor of Troy McClure too. In my opinion though, the voice of Troy McClure from The Simpsons almost sounds like the voice of Zapp Brannigan from Futurama.
Man that was really too bad that Phil Hartman had to go and I've heard already that there was going to be a sequel to this game too. That would have been so awesome if there ever was a sequel to the original Blasto for real and if only I could see how that would be like too. If only Phil Hartman was still alive though. Then the sequel wouldn't have been cancelled. Oh well. Great game again anyway and awesome gameplay in the video too. Blasto rocks! Phil Hartman is such a great voice actor too.
This game here is still the best too and I still have it for my PS1 console as well. It's also backwards compatible on both my PS2 and PS3 consoles now as well. It's so awesome. The reason why Episode 5 would have to be my most favorite level in the game is because on the old Interactive CD Volume 7 demo disc for PS1, this game appeared on the disc as a demo game and this was the only stage I was able to play on the demo. So I kind of got to know Episode 5 well. Blasto rocks!
