Why would you end the video?..

wtf what kind of glider is this? it doesnt show too much tendency to stabilize itself nor to spin the lines out... this shoud never happen with a 1-2 rated wing and a proper harness combo... one of my friends wing did similar in the 90ties but that was a blue angel x-O

I think the book might have expected a little more, you could definitely get your glider, Yet to acknowledge that a situation so unexpected reaction is natural to take the parachute :-)

So your "Oh Fu@#" realisation comes at about 0:51, followed very shortly thereafter by a decision to throw the reserve?

as a glider pilot i always thought that u could only themral in gliders, this has truly opened my eyes .. this would be an amazing feeling!!

@skunksbutt Exactly what you are suppose to do when making up your mind about throwing your reserve according to the DVD Instability II, which is given to many beginner paragliders on Day 1 of school (like I was). There are no old bold pilots, and thanks for posting this educational vid for us rooks!

@pmny119 its different... very different. im a skydiver too but alot of friends paragilde and they say the ditch procedure can be completely different at times. obviously his decision alt is lower but he was already way past critical alt for a skydiver when he stalled/turbulence so after that he was even lower. pretty sketch with that variable terrain. we all would have called him an idiot if this was his death video too so i think he made an appropriate call.

Thanks for sharing because I will never do this myself!

@pmny119 I thought the camera was off as I was just thermaling, I was trying to turn it on to at least catch the end but I ended up turning it off instead. I landed without a scratch.

why you use reserve? to fast... your wings was stability. Its only twist.

@Chrzaszczu1 As it happens, I see twists, I say to myself, "I can work with this", I check altitude, look up again and see more twists and say to myself, " I can't work with this" and decide to throw. My mind is made up at that point and I am throwing. After that, it starts to look ok. Last time I tried to work with it all the way to the ground and I ended up breaking my back. No need to be a hero. I'm alive with not even a scratch. Good enough for me.

I think your assessment is correct. Sudden speedbar use bluntly lowers AoA, wing surges forward, dives, and gains airspeed (all normal). Sudden speedbar release approaching max airspeed swings the pilot under, wing goes well back - Stall! Spin!! At 0:55 it stabilises nicely straight and level, and if you had not pulled a big handful of brakes at that point you might have been given the opportunity to untwist your lines. Always make gentle changes to AoA allowing airspeed to follow.

@SteveWrightNZ The first time you can see the glider its pointed nose down with the tips tucked. Not really like a full stall at all. More like a frontal, maybe asymmetric frontal. Other pilots (good ones) were reporting slack line frontals that day, more than average. Even asymmetric full stalls don't usually turn like that. The glider turned nose down before my weight loads up and gets the glider spinning. If I got a frontal with high AoA and that heavily loaded, thats strong.
