Maybe he thought he'll be leaving for a few years and perhaps when he gets back she'd already find somebody else (he thought that one night love affair wouldn't really last anyway). Perhaps that's why he tore up the paper.

When your in War you can't be thinking about other stuff, you gotta stay focused, to survive. Maybe that's why he teared up the paper?
