Less than a year old this stain has come off and not stained anything. I bought it at Walmart in May of 2008 and this video was taken April 25, 2009. McCloskey 100# acrylic latex deck and siding stain. Accent base 7952, macadam gray #96093. I used a sprayer to apply the stain after I had pressure washed the deck and let it dry for a few days. It looked great, but this is what happened over the winter. I can see no stain in the wood at all, it looks like the stain just laid on top like a layer of paint. What to do? I can't find any of my receipts so I will probably have to eat this. I think I used six or eight gallons. I had a party come up so I made an emergency "wash". I had almost a gallon of the stain left over from last year, so I mixed it with an equal amount of water and used a roller with a long handle to put it on. Just on the horizontal surfaces that were most affected. Done in an hour and it looks pretty good. Of course it won't last but making a "wash" is a good, quick solution to an ugly deck.

  • how does your deck look now? did you change the deck paint you used? You should try deckscapes by sherwin williams. Also, you should probably roll the paint on next time instead of spraying when it comes to a deck. And how many coats of stain? 1 or 2? Did you use primer?

  • I don't know what the deck looks like, there's about a foot and half of snow on it, if you're from Lehigh, PA, you know what I am talking about. But, I plan on doing the same thing this year if need be. I plan on mixiing a a gallon of stain with a gallon of water and doing the wash thing again with a rolller. It only takes 20 minutes and it lookd great all summer and was fine the last I saw of it in the fall. I decided the big effort is not worth it.

  • You need a penatrating stain!!!Its peeling because its not a penatrating stain! That looks like a paint

  • This is obvious human error. You should be pressure spraying this deck possibly twice before application. DO NOT DILLUTE WITH WATER EVER. You may thin but be cautious, you will not spray this with a sprayer, too thick if you have an air compressor go to harbor freight, for $16 buy a low volume (20 psi) sprayer(for latex stain oil) spray at 20 psi you will be very happy with the results. I have mcckloskey solid russet, over 5 yrs. dropped a hammer on it and it dented never chipped. plus 3 dogs GL

  • haha, this is exactly what has happened to my fathers deck every year, he pays me every spring to have it painted again.

  • you're final product is in the prep work.

One thing I learned recently is that latex stain doesn't jive with pressure treated wood very well. That could have contributed to the failure.
