This is my MG Metro engine from my Mini. After a head gasket fail and leaving in the garage over the winter for water to get in the engine it was time for an engine rebuild.

The engine had done 35000miles but the gearbox had done 80000miles so it probably needed a new diff pin.
The bores needed a hone, a new oil pump and a couple of special go faster parts.
The engine was dyno'd a couple of years back with 74.3horse power which is good for a standard MG Metro engine. Thats the figure to beat. It also did 103mph! I know because I fitted a

Smiths speedo in because it would go off the old clock.
103mph in a stripped out Mini is UNBA- FRICKIN- LEAVABLE!

The gearbox was scrubbed inside and out with Gunk and all the gear teeth were fine. I'll change the baulk rings though just in case they're worn.

I'll fit a load of titanium Mini parts I sell and I think I'll try out some titanium head studs I made for this engine to see if they're appropriate for the job and don't stretch.

The music is track 18 from the Nine Inch Nails album Ghosts.

  • I used to hold the record at our garage from driving a metro into the garage, removing the engine and having it split from the gear box on the bench in 33 minutes The early Metros 3rd motion shaft bearing in the gearbox always wore out for some reason, I was the man for the job!

Good luck when you do the radius arm bushes, they's fiddly things.. the bodywork likes to rot around there too.

  • @marshalllucky Never driven a Panda myself but they look quite fun.

When I first fitted the MG Metro engine in the Mini it was wheelspinning in third gear. :)

I had to fit wider tyres and a new speedo that had numbers higher than 90mph. I can't get it to go beyond 103mph but hopefully some go faster engine parts will take it beyond that. :D

  • @waddmyster yes I know how you feel the panda is too cheeky and nippy to resist , I would chose the panda also ;-)

  • @marshalllucky lol is that a joke? a classic mini with an MG engine, or a fiat panda..... i dont think i need to answer that !

  • good for this guy repairing something rather than buying a new ?

  • if your car is broken why do you simply not buy new one ?you could have nice shiny panda or them kias are quite nippy.

  • Yeah, it wasn't the cleverest idea.

I thought, "should I edit it out?"

Then thought, nah, at least others will know it's not the way.

  • Why would you try and lift the crank with rods and pistons connected?
