What Makes a Genius?
Could you have come up with Einstein's theory of relativity? If not - why not? This is what Marcus du Sautoy, professor of mathematics, wants to explore. Marcus readily admits that he is no genius, but wants to know if geniuses are just an extreme version of himself - or whether their brains are fundamentally different.

Marcus meets some remarkable individuals - Tommy, an obsessive artist who uses his whole house as his canvas; Derek: blind, autistic, and a pianist with apparently prodigious gifts; Claire who is also blind, but whose brain has learnt to see using sound.

Marcus is shown how babies have remarkable abilities which most of us lose as teenagers. He meets a neuroscientist who claims he has evidence of innate ability, a scientist who's identified a gene for learning, and Dr. Paulus, who has discovered how to sharpen the brain... by electrically turbo-charging it.

  • i hate the way youtube comments are geared toward getting thumbs up instead of really giving an insightful opinion. all these bad jokes, its like a pathetic popularity contest

  • I have heard about that experiment supposedly discovering the 'learning gene'. However, they failed to mention that further study showed that the mice who had the gene 'turned off' were able to overcome this impairment as long as they were raised in an intellectually stimulating environment. There may be a predisposition for genius, but not necessarily a genetic imperative. From what I have seen, genius is inherent (up to a point) in everyone as long as the environment fosters learning.

  • poor mousey

  • does anyone know if there is a website where i could take the dot test

  • Augh! The Brontes can't tell you anything about genetic inheritance of intelligence because they were also all raised in the same environment! Boo! Come on dude, this is an interesting show, man up and mention the problems.

  • "The anatomy of our brain has a direct bearing on how we use it" - OR, how we use it has a direct bearing on our brain's anatomy. I'm in Criminology, and get into debates over this very issue: e.g. whether people are born psychopaths. The theory I run into most is that psychopaths are BORN with a 'neurological impairment', a different type of brain. That fails to take into consideration that how we use the brain may actually affect the brain's structure. So, um, please say that, show.

  • the answer to most of your qustions is motivation... for example

    - Thomas Edison - "Results? Why, man, I have gotten lots of results! If I find 10,000 ways something won't work, I haven't failed. I am not discouraged, because every wrong attempt discarded is often a step forward"

    - Albert Einstein -"I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious."

  • I hate it when videos like this are filled with comments without any englightened opinions.
