There are so many recordings floating on the net with raja rao being the accompaniment... Listen to the way he has played for the "VARNAMS" ... Almost he has played only for the talams and not the "Varnam" or he doesnt have the calibre... Varnathukku amatha teryanum.. "naggu gunna Naggu gunna" for varnam is shady! :-)

The first line of Raja rao is the answer fo the question... and the rest are really filthy! He doesnt have to explain too much about the 'restroom' culture.. If HIS (raja rao) thani is thrilling, fitting, good, neat, LONG with mathematical intricacies then i accept he has every rights to talk in the stage, otherwise he can just shut his mouth and play and fill his pocket!

For me it is the other way round. I go only for the Thani Avarthanam and dont care about the rest too much

enissophilia is a stupid man. he is making blind comments on music.
See people going out when "thani" stars doesn't mean that laya vidvans are of low calibre,it only shows rasikas the poor literacy in music,and rasikas uncivilized behavior.Always laya vidvans are great. only laya part of cutcheri makes the concert success.

She asked a very good question and Raja rao sir's reply is so apt.I mainly wanted to comment on enissophilia's reply.I think he doesn't know what carnatic music and what is the greatness of laya.He seems to be a stupid. his reply is totally pointless.moreover he is making unnecessary comment on thani avarthanam.Hey man what you know about Layam? are you a mridangist vocalist or an educated rasika?.

Question is, "Laya vidwans should know the Songs or not".. Raja-Rao's Speech is unwarranted and doesnt make any sense just like his "thani". It purely depends on how the mridangist frame the thaniavarthanam, if the rasikas move out..it just shows the calibre of the laya vidwans.
