An unboxing video of the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II and Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM lenses, along with their respective lens hoods. Canon lens hoods are apparently sold separately for these particular lenses.

My camera wasn't properly set for autofocus for the taping, so all the closeups are out of focus, I apologize. Hope you still get something out of the video. :)

The background music is "Feedback Welcome" by Timo Maas.

For sample pictures from both lenses, you can check my Flickr account at http://www.flickr.com/photos/rzr82/

  • A few questions....

So do feel like these lenses are too zoomed in if you are using a APSC camera like a 550D? Like do you have to step back more often? Is it really bad?

    And...

Do you optically notice any differences with these besides the focal length? Which would you sell? Which is better as far as image quality?

    Thanks Bro!

  • @Smalskin For the most part I use both of these outdoors. On a crop camera, they are very narrow. Unless I'm shooting in a hall of some sort, they're too tight for regular indoor photography for me. That said, they produce stunning images, even the cheap 50mm. If I would sell any of these two it would be the 50mm though, just because of the focusing. It's rather slow and seems to miss more often than my two others. The 85mm is no doubt the best all around, with my Sigma 30mm a close second.

  • Great video! Can't wait to get my 85 mm soon to arive any day now! =D

  • @Morningsidenursery Thanks. :) Congrats on the 85mm, it's my favorite lens. :)

  • WARNING...DONT EVER DROP THAT 50mm 1.8 it will self destruct!

  • @hapkido4 Indeed it's very fragile, but for the price it's not the biggest loss either and one can easily afford a new one.

  • Sweet, getting my Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 soon. Thanks for sharing.

Btw, the music and the way your gestures make it look like a magic show lol.

  • Next time you're going to manually force a FD lens on the EF mount of a 1D mk IV !?!?
