The Death Penalty Olympics - Beijing 2008 - Tracey Curtis

If the death penalty was an olympic sport at the upcoming 2008 China/Beijing Olympics, China with its appaling human rights record would win the olympic gold medal. Over 1000 recieved the death penalty alone in 2006, with the USA and IRAN recording the 2nd and 3rd highest number of deaths. Human Rights seemingly in China are not important. ok the song was written severel years ago when it was announced that china was to be hosting the bejing olympics. which many people opposed due to chinas pretty appaling historic, and ongoing human rights record...

now i did not write it, so i cant say what tracey thought as she wrote it, only what she has said about it since, but the premise is that an olympics where being hosted in a country who are currently leading the world in one thing.. executions..

thefore if there was a competition, or olympic event for killing people china would win..

i know lot of americans have taken it personally, but the main point is that thousands of people are killed in china every year, often without proper trial, and for minor crimes..

the reason it was done in almost karaoke style is that at traceys gigs, the death penalty song, because of maybe its tempo, the chorus reading out countries, almost became a singalong in a very strange ironic way..

obviously its not a happy song, hence the singalong aspect was so ironic.. its then that the idea of a singalong web version came about...

and i think you will find that most, brits for instance, are not only opposed to the indiscrimate murder/execution of 2000 people a year, and the fiasco with tibet, darfur etc, but are also opposed to uk and the us being in iraq as well.. personally i not only oppose the chinese civil rights problems etc, the war in iraq, but also the japanese killing wales and countless other things...

you will find the same artist has also written many many anti war songs, and songs aimed at george bush..

I have kept fairly quiet, but its interesting to see the various comments. I must drag tracey here at some point to make her comments as she wrote it, but the upset americans are interesting. The one thing that i took from it is that despite the world viewing america as chief (purponents?) of the DP, that china have executed more people in 1 year than the US in 20.. its mind boggling to think of thousands being killed each year.
