He wore the best he had each time he appeared.

@mrmomoto Hey, that was the way a lot of those 'Country and Western' stars dressed then. Times were different, and that, is what one must remember. Stop slapping on today's thinking on those of a different era. That's the way it was, and 50 years from now, they'll probably laugh at you too.
