This song is liberation incarnate. Maybe for Elton & Bernie it was a "coming out" song, but for anyone with rationality of heart and mind, this is about being who you really are. It's about giving up the illusion, the denial, the slavery. The Yellow Brick Road (of Oz) was a pathway to self-discovery, finding that all you need is already with you. The roots of each of our truths already exists. All we have to do is go down the path and get past it, past our own delusions and fears. Go now!

Interesting theory! I'm not saying 100% sold, but I'm going to look into it myself.

I've always thought of this as the aftermath of Honky Cat. Honky Cat is about leaving the farm for the city. Now the narrator says "I should have stayed on the farm, I should have listened to my old man" as opposed to "all the folks back home said I was a fool". In Honky Cat he wants the "high-classed ladies down in New Orleans", now he thinks someone will "get a replacement". I know they're probably not actually connected, but I think it's an interesting idea.
