National Association of Hispanic Journalists
27th Annual Convention and Media & Career Expo
Friday, June 26, 2009 - San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Juan Gonzales, Founder and Editor, El Tecolote, San Francisco was inducted into the NAHJ Hall of Fame.

With a career in journalism that dates
back to 1970, Juan Gonzales is
currently a Latino newspaper founder
and an educator. As the founder and
editor of El Tecolote, a biweekly,
bilingual newspaper first published in
1970 in San Franciscos Mission District, Gonzales has continued
his goal to provide relevant coverage on the real issues that
affect the neighborhood. Through El Tecolote, he has attempted
to highlight the popular culture that exists in the Latino
community, which often times is neglected by the local dailies.
Since 1985, Gonzales has been the sole full-time instructor in
the department of journalism at City College of San Francisco
where he teaches four classes per semester and serves as
department chair. He also serves as adviser to the awardwinning
campus newspaper, The Guardsman.
Currently, Gonzales is also president of Acción Latina, a nonprofit
Mission District organization that provides educational
and cultural services to Latinos. Through his association with
Acción Latina, he founded in 1980 Encuentro del Canto
Popular, a yearly Latin American folk music festival held in the
Mission District. Additionally, Gonzales is director of the Voices
for Justice Project that is documenting the history of the Latino
press in the U.S. by producing a film, book and website.
In 2000, El Tecolote celebrates its 30th anniversary. For those
years of service the Society of Professional Journalists honored
Gonzales with its Distinguished Service Award. Similarly in
that year, ABCs KGO-TV honored him with a Heroes of
Excellence award. From 1998-2000, Gonzales served as Northern California
president of the Journalism Association of Community
Colleges. In 1983 Gonzales was honored by the National
Association of Third World Journalists for distinguished service
to the Latino community. At one time, Gonzales was a full-time
general assignment reporter for United Press Internationals San
Francisco bureau (1970) and Associated Presss San Francisco
bureau (1985).
In 1970 Gonzales founded a publishing collective called Espina
del Norte Publishing. Four years later, he was awarded the
Carey McWilliams Medal for publishing service to the Latino
community. Gonzales has also been a contributing writer for
Quill, In These Times, The San Joaquin Progressor, and Nuestro.
He also co-published the book Strike, a documentary of the
student strike at San Francisco State that took place from
1968-1970.
Gonzales has an AA degree in journalism from San Joaquin
Delta College in Stockton, Calif., a BA degree in journalism
from San Francisco State University, and an MA degree in mass
communications from Stanford University.
