Aishwarya Rai launches her movie 'Provoked' in London

Bollywood screen goddess Aishwarya Rai was in London on Tuesday for the launch of her movie 'Provoked.'Cast and crew attended a press conference in London's West End to celebrate the launch of the film which also stars Naveen Andrews, Miranda Richardson, Robbie Coltrane, Nandita Das and Steve McFadden.

The former Miss World, who has been subject to press speculation recently regarding her wedding to Abhishek Bachchan, managed to tactfully dodge questions about the forthcoming event - choosing instead to focus on the film.

With her latest release the glamorous actress looks set to shock her legions of fans with her new gritty role which depicts the struggles of a battered wife.

Directed by Jag Mundhra, 'Provoked' is the true story of the 23 year old Punjabi woman Kiranjit Ahluwalia, (played by Aishwarya Rai) who after enduring a difficult upbringing was forced into an arranged marriage in London, only to be remorselessly beaten and tortured by her alcoholic husband.

Eventually she murders him by setting him alight on fire, is charged with murder and sentenced to life imprisonment.

Her cell mate, a wealthy British woman Veronica Scott (Miranda Richardson) is so moved by her plight she asks her step-brother, Lord Edward Foster (Robbie Coltrane), a leading lawyer to help her with her appeal.

A court room battle follows in which Ahluwalia is finally set free, setting British legal history.

Her landmark case called Regina vs. Ahluwalia, redefined the word "provocation," and created a new defence for women suffering domestic violence.
