THIS VIDEO PROVIDED TO US COURTESY NATO CHANNEL Afghan run-off election NATO CHANNEL VIDEO NATO Training Afghanistan Giving Election Guidance Portuguese ISAF mentors living and working side by side with their Afghan counterparts during election week to ensure security for voters. Shotlist:
--VOICEOVER-- With the afghan elections just around the corner, registered voters in Kabul have one issue at the forefront of their minds.
--SOUNDBITE-- (DARI DUBBED IN ENGLISH) "I will vote because I want to restore security and stability by casting my vote." --SOUNDBITE-- (DARI DUBBED IN ENGLISH) "I expect the new government to maintain a real security." --SOUNDBITE-- (PASHTO DUBBED IN ENGLISH) "The security is not good, if the security is not good people will not dare to vote and go to the polling station." --VOICEOVER-- These Portuguese soldiers, working with ISAF, are preparing to assist Afghan Security Forces for election week. Heading south out of Kabul City, their destination is the Musahi valley, which has seen local Taliban attempt to intimidate the voting population.
Portuguese forces are here to mentor Afghan senior officers from the Kabul Capital Division. Throughout the election period, part of the mentoring team will live, work, eat and sleep here with their Afghan counterparts. --SOUNDBITE-- (ENGLISH) Mentoring also involves the responsibility of training and coaching. It means that for every mission that the Kabul Capital Division has to perform we will be by their side allowing and helping them to perform and to accomplish this mission. REPORTER PIECE TO CAMERA-- The Musahi valley is one of the hottest spots in Kabul province in terms of Taliban activity. Which makes it even more essential that come voting day, Afghans are able to choose their President safely and securely. --VOICEOVER-- That's why the Afghan Security Forces have made it one of the priority places for achieving security on election day. --SOUNDBITE-- (DARI DUBBED IN ENGLISH) "In Musahi there are many insurgents. They occupy this area and they could prevent the people from participating in the election. We made a security belt around this place so that people can participate in the elections and choose their own president as they want with their own will. " --VOICEOVER-- Only next door to the Musahi central command, is a house once owned by the leader of Hizb-i-Islami, one of the country's main insurgent factions, before security forces cleared this area. During election week, the Portuguese mentors staying here will advise Colonel Zanif on his decisions and, if these forces come under attack, they will fight as one.
Basically I will be something like Colonel's Zanif's shadow. So I'll be working by his side, just advising him and eventually doing small tasks, planning tasks for his support.
--VOICEOVER-- But this support is vital to help democracy come to this troubled region at a crucial point in history for the country.
--SOUNDBITE-- (ENGLISH) Right now we are really having a period very important to the people of Afghanistan. We are helping this country to find the way of stability, to find the way of democracy and so I feel very honoured and very proud for all my men to be here serving the people of Afghanistan. --SOUNDBITE-- (DARI DUBBED IN ENGLISH) The Afghan National Army came here to provide security and we will protect the people. The people should participate in the election with no fear of danger. They should vote and they should choose their own President, the President who can really serve the country, as they want. And we will promise to provide the security and do our best.
--VOICEOVER-- As the team splits in two, temporary goodbyes are said. In only a short time the ability of voters to exercise their voting right will depend on these men. Next week they'll be able to measure that success.
