Luke Kelly (Irish: Lúcás Ó Ceallaigh; 17 November 1940 - 30 January 1984) was an Irish singer and folk musician who was born in the dockside area of Dublin, Ireland, notable as a founding member of the band The Dubliners. Luke Kelly remains a Irish music icon in death as in life, and his music is widely regarded as a cultural treasure. He united Dubliners in their appreciation of their own native traditions in ballads and street songs and, years later, when the City Council was divided along Civil War lines over the naming of a new bridge over the River Tolka, the councillors quickly united as Tony Gregory proposed that it be named after Luke Kelly. The Ballybough Bridge in the north inner city of Dublin has been renamed the "Luke Kelly Bridge". The song in this video is "Dublin in the Rare Old Times", a song composed by Pete St. John in the 1970s for the Dublin City Ramblers. The song tells of the changes that have occurred in Dublin since the 1960s. The song is often just called "The Rare Auld Times" and has been sung by many artists such as The Dubliners and Flogging Molly. It was first recorded by The Dublin City Ramblers. The photographs are from various sources, many of them archival.

  • wonderful!

  • What a beautiful voice! And the song and the photos are so beautiful they move me to tears. You have the ability, Paganmaestro, to see beyond the obvious and probe deep into the heart of a song or poem. Your willingness to share your insights has been better than any college course I could have taken.
