According to my Art History Professor Emily Morgan, Robert Capa was the first Celebrity War Photographer, and they just recently put contact sheets and other things from his Mexican suitcase on display for people to see at the International Center of Photography. Around 4,500 negatives from the Spanish Civil War were discovered in the suitcase.
