  • If you are a sloppy pilot you will like the forgiving Cessnas but if you are a good pilot (who gets away with not been is not) there is nothing to fear about Grummans except cross control stall avoidance under 2,000 feet. I taught over 600 hours on AA-1's. The most fun a CFI can have in the 1970's. The example taken for Cirrus, RV's and all fast non riveted airframes we have now. Grummans were too progressive for Clods and Coward Pipipilots we baby with Cessnas.

  • actually it wasn't this plane that crashed near PNE. it was grumman aa-1.

these planes' airfoil design really sucks. its a death trap.

i feel more safer in a cessna. but i wish the aviation school would have had diamond or cirrus. they are the best.

  • this plane crashed killing the CFI and student last year on red lion road near PNE airport because the CFI tried to bank a turn upon traffic controller's instructions at high angle of attack (low altitude)...leading to an unrecoverable, accelerated stall close to the ground. i tried to ask hortman aviation about it, they never replied back.

  • You mean they land like a brick if you stall 'em. They won't bounce like a C-172, not very forgiving if your sloppy, but what a thrill to fly.

  • Don't stall a Grumman with x-controls at any altitude, the spin is likely not recoverable....

  • They are OK... about 10 knots faster in the pattern as compared to C172's.

  • Just don't stall Grummans at low altitudes with crossed controls. Other than that, nail our airspeed or you'll float all the way down

    the runway! :-)

  • same could be said about many great airplane designs. Always fly like you mean it anyway.

(300 happy and safe hours in various Grummans)

  • the tigers don't fly like a brick.

  • Ahhhhh...Hortman's Grummans. The brick with wings! Fly'em like you mean business or they'll bit.
