Gustav Mahler (1860-1911)
Fünf Lieder nach Texten von Friedrich Rückert (Rückert-Lieder, 1901/1902)
"Liebst du um Schönheit!"
Thomas Hampson, baritone
Wolfram Rieger, piano
Live Recording: 18. Aug 2005
Salzburger Festspiele 2005
Liebst du um Schönheit,
O nicht mich liebe!
Liebe die Sonne (Frühling?),
Sie trägt ein gold'nes Haar!
Liebst du um Jugend,
O nicht mich liebe!
Liebe den Frühling,
Der jung ist jedes Jahr!
Liebst du um Schätze,
O nicht mich liebe.
Liebe die Meerfrau,
Sie hat viel Perlen klar.
Liebst du um Liebe,
O ja, mich liebe!
Liebe mich immer,
Dich lieb' ich immerdar.

He sang a wrong word! Should be "Sonne" the first time round. :-)

Don't know how you can write that. Hampson is the greatest working baritone going right now. This is a wonderful giving of a difficult song for the baritone voice, bouncing between head and chest voice. I have a recording of the entire Rückert Lieder of him and the San Francisco Symphony/MTT which is absolutely flawless, IMHO.

well... mistakes happen in live recordings... which this is. It happens all the time... this one just happened to be recorded and released.

For some reason, as a baritone, I just can't get into Hampson's voice. IMO, this interpretation just feels uncontrolled and shaky, like he didn't know the music that well.
