A self-taught artist, archivist, and reference librarian at the Columbus Metropolitan Library, Leni D. Anderson brings his installation War and Peace to the OSU Urban Arts Space this summer as an exploration medieval and renaissance-inspired art in a post-9/11 world. Departing from a state of chaos and confusion that occurred as a result of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, Anderson experienced a moment of self-actualization upon connecting with the medieval/renaissance galleries in the Cleveland Museum of Art during a visit in early 2002.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"War and Peace" is a continuation of my series of artwork inspired by medieval and renaissance art and artists titled "(Re) Interpreting the Artwork of Pieter Bruegel and the Art of the Middle Ages," and explores the socio-political and cultural conflicts and divisions in the United States since the beginning of the 21st Century.

I use Western religious and secular images most people have some familiarity with, and famous quotes that span the history of humankind. Even though my artwork looks religious, it is not; what I request from my audience is that they apply their understanding of the images, their symbolic and/or actual meaning to issues and events happening in today's society.

My goal as an artist is to use my artwork to challenge thoughts and opinions (subjective and objective) about how we as individuals & as members of society-at-large interpret, form, and/or base our understanding and beliefs about information (visual, text and media based) we have grown up with and are confronted with on a daily basis."
