Power over Ethernet (PoE) is a standardized system of using communications lines to supply low voltage power to networked devices with limited -- or no -- available AC power. Examples would include devices like IP cameras, wireless access points and IP phones.

Mike Fahrion, director of project management at B&B Electronics, explains how PoE can solve some of the problems that crop up when devices are installed outside of the typical IT closet:

- What do you do when your power-sourcing PoE switch is mounted in a rugged location, such as on or near an industrial machine that creates extreme vibration or wide ranges in temperature?

- What do you do when your PoE-powered device needs more than 15W?

- What happens when you need to install a PoE switch in a cabinet that doesn't have AC power?

- What do you do when a PoE-powered device must be installed more than 100 meters from the switch cabinet?

Watch and learn how you can use PoE to resolve problems in even the most challenging applications.
