Stephen waa the Vice President of the CSA. He and Davis had totally different views on the founding of the CSA. Have you ever read Davis' Inaugural Adresses?
I could show you where Lincoln made similar comments to Stephen's in The Lincoln-Douglas debates of 1858.

True, a good number of States' Ordinances of Secession did highlight disagreements with the Abolitionist view. But you know that you are ignoring much of the story: Abolitionism had come to promote murder of Southern whites by slaves. Now a strictly northern Party full of Abolitionists had one the White House and too much strength in the Congress to trust for their very safety. Remember, in Haiti, the whites had emancipated the slaves, but then slaves killed all the whites. South had no choice.

Slavery was an issue but not the main issue.Cotton was king and the people view the tremendous tax that lincoln wanted to put on them as invasion.DAVIS NOR LINCOLN WERE THAT GREAT.

If you understand how much slaves cost back then, most people could not own a slave! and this is why most of the people could not own them and if they could at the time they would have and also we have to remember that the south was the bible belt too!
Just remember, the winners write history.

@cycloneous the political correctness is that everyone has to pretend the South was not founded on slavery, that their leaders were not violent cruel terrorist. Also, no one is supposed to mention that for 40 years, the South had been controlled by violent and unconstitutional means - stopping free press, stopping free speech, violating every part of the constitution, and not allowing real elections.

The Nazi-Slaver like Lee, Davis, Yancey, Toombs, used rhetoric that fools you dumb fuck to this day.
Only -- they made mistake of talking differently when they thought their words would not be known later. They would fuck up by telling the truth sometimes.
Davis and Stephens both bragged slavery was the FOUNDATION of the Confederacy. Lee wrote he was SUPPOSED to cause pain and cruelty to slaves -- it was God's will. Davis said God "delivered the negro to our hands" to enslave.

You fucks lost an election -- despite your best attempts not to even allow one. You fucks had threatened all through the campaign that if Lincoln won, you would take that as "declaration of war".
SO you lose the election anyway -- and you go ballistic. You hang voters, threaten the capital, and attack US troops.
If that's what you fucks want to do again when you lose -- do it.
We will kick your fucking ass again.

Hoaxie dumb fuck -- sorry idiot -- the Nazi like scum had taken over the South from 1820 on. Got that retard? They shut down free speech, free press, just like Nazis. They ended real elections. Just like Nazis.
They invaded new states and territories, killing and attacking to spread their slavery. They hung voters to intimidate everyone.
The Civil War was the South using more violence to spread slavery dumb fuck/
Learn about your Nazi like past idiot.

It worked very effectively as political rhetoric to justify the invasion of land that might have been regained by more diplomatic means... Political arguements are never about issues they're about powers/priveleges. For instance, Who's put the most money into the support of Prop 8? Not churches or moral authorities, but corporations who want to defend the economic priveleges of marriage, if sanctity was important we would fight against allowing people to get married in a drive thru by Elvis.

Hoax dumb fuck -- so the south was LYING iin their official documents? Their speeches? Their Declaration of Causes? Their books?
So when they said over and over secession and the war was about SLAVERY --- they were covering up for what? That it was for "states rights"?
What a dumb fuck. Yeah retard, Im sure they would try to COVER UP that it was for slavery by pretending it was for states rights.
What a fucking idiot. You fucks TODAY are pretending it was for stats rights.
This comment has received too many negative votes show
Charlie --- yes fuck head, the Confederates telling the truth would tend to FUCKING backfire wouldnt it.
The South LOVED the Cornerstone speech dumb fuck. It was cheered widley .
It says just what the South's Declaration of Causes said idiot.
Scum Southern States wrote official Declarations of Causes -- no fucking wonder you inbred retards have hid them too. They are just like the Cornerstone speech. Just like many other insane Confederate shit.

So very true, take my ancestors for example. I can prove 11 confederate veterans in my family tree, I can also prove that none of them owned slaves. I continue to fly my confederate flag .

I think the problem is that the media and political correctness is what is causing the problem we are witnessing.
For too long, people have been accustomed to seeing other tarnish the flag but the other side to that is that no many speak up. If people spoke up, in particular the South, and make it a point to say hey, we are not about racism or the neo-nazis, etc. I think you will at least begin to see a change in attitude.

I hear the point your trying to make. But let's remember, the Confederate army was fighting on behalf of the states and therefore the interest of the states. The aristocracy in the south (the state) had an interest in maintaining and expanding slavery due to the profits they had achieved. Many of the poor "whites" in the south had become pacified with the illusion of white privilege and patriotism. Stop it.

Hi WerdKemist,
I see what you are saying, and you make a good point, however, you have to understand what induced the southern States to leave the Union.
Remember, see slavery was not even the tip of the iceberg that made the war last so long. Did slavery spark the fire, yes, it did but far from being the sole cause. You have to look back to 1787 to see the initial cause, and that is the role of government.
