I think it may be the meaning of that Alan is a superhero, superheros are expected to save people but really all he does is try his best to . It's one murder after the next . Do you know how many people get murdered a day?!? Really he's a hero because he caries the burden of even trying to save them not because he never gets there in time. Art is meant to evoke thought and emotion in the person experiencing it. It is very subjective. Also, if you consider the pattern set by most famous artists, their work was much more appreciated in the mainstream a considerably long time after it was created.
