Can someone identify this cockroach? I work in the sewer industry inspecting sewer lines and I came across this strange type of cockroach. Believe me, i've been in the industry for a while and NEVER saw anything like this before. The largest, strangest, four horned (or undeveloped wings) hybrid of a roach i've EVER seen! If someone can idenditfy this cockroach, please send me links to pictures or websites that shows me what kind of cockroach this is. I tried Google'ing it, but the closest I came to was an "Oriental cockroach"...but that still didn't cut it...I put this vid in the "Science and Technology" section in hopes there's some scientist who can indentify this thing.

  • Thanks man. Its just weird to see something this huge in Hawaii. If you read my commentary, i've been in the business a while and NEVER saw anything like that! HAHA!

  • Yeah, I found out it's a molting roach a few days after, but....the size was ridiculous! Believe me, i've seen many roaches in this industry, but none like this size...especially in the sewers.

  • Its a molting oriental cockroach as seen in this video -> youtube.com/watch?v=kK8HLsrQaR8

The oriental roach at its mature age is 1 to 1.5 inches long, although I've not personally seen one that big. I see a lot of them around 1cm long.

  • The small brown ones are juveniles of the same species as the white (newly molted) one. They do not appear to be Blatta but a Periplaneta species. Those "horns" are indeed wings. They are flaccid just after molting from the last juvenile stage to the adult stage. The individual will pump them with hemolymph, blood, so they can reach their true size. You probably don't seem many like this because the adult karri ute themselves away from aggregations like this.
