A nice 3-hour hike up to the ruins of the Echo Mountain House (built in 1894) in Altadena, CA. The round trip was 5 miles with an elevation gain of 1400 ft. The trailhead is located at the end of Lake Avenue, in the former Cobb Estate, one of the premier mansions of a bygone era. The hike provides breath-taking views of Pasadena and L.A. Basin below and would be a great weekend outing with kids.

  • great video. Is this place supposed to be haunted at night?

  • @fake1009 Yes, supposedly. But I have never seen anything paranormal, even when I went up there on the night of Ju;y 4, 2010.

  • I have done this hike too many times to count, since I was a kid in the 1950's. In the old days we usually were dropped off on the Mt. Wilson road, hiked to the top of Mount Lowe, then down to the ruins of an old hotel which was served by the Mt. Lowe Railway, a train line that ran from the hotel to the top of the Echo Mountain cable car. We would follow the railway to Echo Mountain, then down to Lake where we had left another car to get home in.

  • @doctorstol Thanks for this interesting tidbit. There is a lot of history in the hills above Pasadena/Altadena.
