The swansong of writer Constantinos Theotokis, Slaves in their Bonds (1922) has been made into a film by director Tony Lykouressis. The film is to make its debut in the 49th International Film Festival of Thessaloniki.
A product of over ten years hard work, Slaves in their Bonds was published in 1922 and is seen as a poignant, confessional narrative. A multi-character, sharp commentary on the social structure of early-20th century Corfu, Theotokiss book provides a vivid image of the passage from an aristocratic to a middleclass society as an upper class which had ruled over the Ionian Islands for more than four centuries had to give way to a new order, often in painful ways. According to Terzakis, Slaves in their Bonds is a novel structured more like a sequence of scenes; indeed, the cinematic nature of the narrative is unanimously observed by all students of Theotokiss work. At the core of both the book and the screenplay is the Ofiomachi, an old noble family whose supremacy is on the wane.
Corfu, at the turn of the 20th century. The dramatic fall of the aristocratic Ofiomachos family and the parallel rise of the new urban class in the Greek state unfolds through the intensity of the love affairs and passions that they provoke.
The love of two young people, the romantic intellectual Alkis Sozomenos and the beautiful young aristocrat Evlalia Ofiomachou, is sacrificed at the altar of a crass financial transaction.
In dire straits, the Ofiomachos clan sets aside both principles and feelings and gives their daughter as a bride to the wealthy physician and Member of Parliament Aristides Steriotis in order to save themselves. But nothing can avert the moral decline and financial ruin that will crush their family.
