1080i stands for for interlaced.

It means there are 540 pixels horizontally and 540 pixels vertically, the image flashes between these two quickly to make it look like one image.

So technically 1080i is 540p x 2 not actually 1080 because there is only 540 pixels on the screen at the one time, however I prefer 1080i to 720p but 1080p>1080i.
