@karltind You are right... it is better to be facing the wing.
However, the problem starts when the wind is too strong to turn around without being dragged by it. And that's when you use this technique. And sometimes the wind can be too strong to be using D's only. Then you need to grab C's.
Mind you... this should be considered only by advanced pilots since flying in winds that strong can easily turn into a situation where you wished you never pulled your wing out.

I find it better to turn round with back to wind and then pull on the d`s.
