New Town Eagles put up an excellent fight to draw 1-1 with reigning champions South Hobart. If both sides had taken their chances, however, South Hobart would have won.
Eagles complained that they scored a second 'goal', but Alex Gordon was clearly ahead of the ball when Adam McKeown slipped it through to him and the assistant referee was correct in flagging for off-side.
To say that South Hobart would have won if all chances that fell to both sides were converted is academic. The fact is that both sides were guilty of some glaring misses and both goalkeepers pulled off some wonderful saves.
South's custodian Sam Kruijver saved his side in the 78th minute when his lightning reflexes enabled him to somehow got down to hold the ball when Ben Whitehall's ground shot seemed destined for the back of the net.
And, Eagles keeper Nathan Pitchford did very well in the first half to deny Greg Downes, and in the second half to beat out a fierce drive by Kostas Kanakaris.
What about the misses? Brayden Mann and Downes missed good openings in the first few minutes before Jim Pennicott scored for South in the 4th minute following a Kanakaris cross.

Eagles equalised out of the blue in the 14th minute. McKeown's left wing cross sailed over everyone and beyond the far post, where Simon Strang collected it and crossed the ball in for Ben Whitehall to score.
In the remainder of the opening half, Eagles battled bravely, while South Hobart's Kanakaris, Mann and Roach all might have scored but shot narrowly wide.
Eagles had two glorious chances in the 77th minute. Clamp had a shot blocked by a defender and, when the ball was crossed back in for McKeown, he headed over the bar with the net beckoning.

The game ended with Downes shooting straight at Pitchford and Luke Huigsloot heading just wide but earning a fruitless corner from a slight deflection.
Clarence United head the standings with 9 points, two ahead of second-placed Eagles and five in front of third-placed South Hobart.
