Please don't cut all the way around the hole. Cutting the same size plug in a "U" or "V" shape allows you to pull the plug but keeping a good size of continuous root system between plug and the rest of the area. Cutting a "V" leaves the dig almost undetectable as well which is the ultimate goal.
sorry but i disagree with this method..you said to cut the plug all the way around..you should only cut 3/4th of the plug..making a flap. if you cut it all the way around, the grass will die.
@throwingwrenches I use the same method and it does not kill the sod IF you dig deep and the ground is fairly moist. IF you are digging in dry times, then the sod may die if you dig shallow. The secret is to dig deep as you can which prevents root damage. I owned a lawn maintenance company when I was a kid and I know about grass. Ripping the roots is what kills grass more than anything so deep is the way to go. Sandy soil is also a problem as the clods of earth just fall apart.
This method will kill the sod. Also, this method will make it so that people will no longer be able to metal detect in parks where this method is being used.
