Music Box
By Gabriel Carvalho

You make my ribs into a xylophone,
My heart pounding a different note
With every step you take
As you flawlessly pass by,
And my bones can't handle the cold
Left behind after you have left the building
Without singing a single song to me,
But I wish you would,
I wish you would stop by my window in the middle of the night,
Take your sharp tongue and butcher the lyrics from your favorite love song,
Order it on our first date when the waitress spilled hot chocolate on your shirt
And I was banned from Johnny Rockets because I tore her hair out when her hand
Got a little too close to where I wanted mine to be
And I swear I could feel your eyes seeing right through my angry body
To the scared and jealous soul inside
Asking "Baby, please don't leave me before I even have a chance to hold you."
After so many years of
I won't hurt you's
I love you's
And this love will never fade's
A boy gets tired you know.
He gets sad and worried
And wonders if the moon has all the answers
If only he could set foot on it,
Maybe every step would tell him how to live,
Tell him which friends to keep, which ones to cut loose,
Because he doesn't want to end up hung by a noose
When he has a brother, a sister, a mother, a father,
Everyone to think about but there are just some days
When the ledge calls me like an old friend
And I swear if I look over it sometimes I can see
Death asking me if I want to go home,
And I wanna say "Yes,"
'Cause I can't remember where my heart is right now,
I've been searching the world for it,
All I can do is feel it get warm, cold, and shrink, and grow,
Then finally, sit down, and shatter with the flood
That comes from the idea that
I'll never be good enough,
I'll never be someone,
I'll always be stuck inside that trapdoor at the bottom of the barrel,
Because no one bothers to check even further after they've scraped the floor,
But sometimes love is about falling through doors you never even knew could open
Into worlds you didn't know existed,
Love is pretty much jumping off a cliff blindfolded,
Not even holding the other person's hand,
You just gotta hope they jump with you,
Or else you're screwed.
It's all about risking your heart, pulling it off off your sleeve
And wearing it like a target,
That just says "Break me,
Break me like you're a four year old holding a brand new toy,
Never touched, never slipped out of anyone's grasp before,
But you just have to let it smash onto the pavement—"
Love isn't always bad,
There will be nights where your laying your head on their chest
And they start to play your ribs like a xylophone making sweet music all night,
And in the morning you swear a mockingbird symphony woke you up.
And I know words don't mean much to you, but I promise
If you let me I'll write a hundred poems that will take your breath away.
Every. Single. One.
And if that doesn't work I'll bring mountains to you,
I'll shake the stars for stardust,
Make wishes on the falling specks,
And tell you that it's possible to fly if you want it to be,
You just have to close your eyes and let your heart soar.
Baby, I know I'm not the Romeo you wanted
The best I can be is your Cosmo,
Messing up for thousands of years,
But showing my love every single way I can,
I know I'm not your knight in shining armor,
But if you close your eyes for a minute,
I can put a shining pail on my head and use a broom
To brush off your insecurities little by little,
Until you can see your beauty through this cloud of dust
That the celebrity skeletons kicked up.
Ashes to ashes,
I'm tired of falling down,
I want to hold you up high,
I want to kiss you on the altar,
While they scream "faggot!"at our love,
I knew I loved you,
When you were too scared to walk home in the dark
So I gave you a candle and took you there,
And that same night you handed me a star.
We always knew the differences between fuck and sleep
We got into so many fights there were days when I thought we were doomed,
Then I looked down at my chest,
Realized I was holding your music box in my hand,
The one that you broke so it couldn't play lullabies.
And I remembered what you told me,
"When the moon is asleep
And your tides bash against my shore,
You just remember that dreaming isn't as great as the real thing
And you go to me,
Shake the dust from my bones,
And just wake me
When it's time to come home."
