ImagingLab built a vision-guided robotics cell based on National Instruments LabVIEW and five Mitsubishi robot arms to assemble 2,500 terminal blocks an hour. The machine can assembly 40 different models and must handle, inspect and mount 32 different components. Each of machine vision stations locates the components using an industrial camera and pattern matching software. The software must determine three things: the location of the component, the attainability of the component (can the robot actually pick it up) and the quality of the component (no defects allowed). LabVIEW then commands the industrial robots (using the LabVIEW Robotics Library for Mitsubishi) to pick up each component and place precisely into the correct position, with an accuracy of 0.02mm.
