Yes, a relay is the simplest and cheapest solution. A schematic is posted on the tesladownunder site under high voltage supplies/sparks for beginners. I do have to admit that pollatollah's would make Rube Goldberg proud :)

I agree with the below use a SPDT relay (old school way of driving a oudin coil or induction coil) or a Interrupter circuit using a timer such as a 555 or 556 (Solid state variation).
