  • Hey, man. I found something similar to the intro to the song you're playing. Check out a tune called Kitchen Girl.

    I hope this helps!

  • @jgenens thanks so much! i'd never heard of kitchen girl before. very cool.

  • Hi there. The melody is actually a combination of two different songs as far as I can tell. The first part is Barlow Knife/ Cabin Creek, but the second part is called Shoes and Stockings or sometimes Flying Indian.

Barlow Knife has a B and C part that you don't play and Shoes and Stockings also has a B part not included in your version, but what you are doing is cool anyhow so I suggest you just name it something new and claim it is your own work.

    cheers.

  • @tinderhorn thank you so much for your help! i believe i learned it as barlow knife, but obviously it was a version that is significantly different from the "standard" version commonly found on youtube (not that i particularly believe there is a "standard" version to any old time song!) anyway, i really appreciate your input because it's helped me research some other tunes, too.

  • Possibly Barlow Knife, aka, Cabin Creek

  • @dropthumb2 i think you are right! i'm pretty sure i learned this under the title "barlow knife" but listening to the other versions of barlow knife on youtube i've realized that this version is significantly different from the others. so i guess the question, then, is: "is this really barlow knife, or something else?" anyway, thank you so much for your input!

  • This is so funny. I believe we had the same banjo teacher. A teacher named Joel in San Francisco taught me that same song about 15 years ago. I play it in the same way. I have no idea what it is called.

My pleasure. I like the way you play the Barlow Knife part of the song a lot, you throw in a few chord-y things in there I hadn't ever thought about. Plus, you know, banjo players get no respect from anyone else so they gotta stick together.

    cheers,

    Adam.
