The First Fruits (Leviticus 23:10) Pointed to the Messiah's resurrection as the first fruits of the righteous. Jesus was resurrected on this very day, which is one of the reasons that Paul refers to him in I Corinthians 15:20 as the "first fruits from the dead."
Biblically speaking, there is absolutely no connection between the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the common modern traditions related to Easter Sunday. Essentially, what occurred is that in order to make Christianity more attractive to non-Christians, the ancient Roman Catholic Church mixed the celebration of Jesus' resurrection with a celebration that involved spring fertility rituals. These spring fertility rituals are the source of the egg and bunny traditions.
It's me, again. Today (May 1, Easter 2), we opened our worship service with this.

I, too am ELCA Lutheran from New Jersey. We sang this today at our family worship, it is one of my favorites - I love everything Lutheran though!

I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. I play the piano and organ. Today (April 4, Easter Sunday). We sang this as our opening hymn. Ditto as we sang it at a local Lutheran Church that I attended Sunrise Service at. It was the opening hymn there, too. It is #382 in Evangelical Lutheran Worship.

Is there an actual name for the melody of this hymn? I'd like to look it up and play it on the organ in church.
