Considering most of the pilots died trying to learn to take off due to the fact that the early biplanes had engines that rotated causing a lot of torque that rolled the plane into the ground on takeoff, throw in the fact that early engines didn't have carbs so they had to cut the fuel off and on to slow down to land. And--the early machine guns were mounted overhead so they didn't hit the prop. These guys are flying the much better aircraft in WW1.
