@gleventhal well said, i agree with you 100% a lot of people i know all just think that bass is just like half of a guitar. i actually got pretty T O'd when they said that. bass is so melodic and sweet but it can have the crunch that a guitar doesnt have sometime.

@MrAndrevdS Yes but you know how Sting and mark king and John Idan became awesome? They practiced their asses off. Nobody's born awesome.

incredibly nice bass terribly awlful sound

@MrAndrevdS 1st string usually means highest, not lowest.. as in pitch.. His thickest string is tuned to a B I think.
-
@MrAndrevdS he was referring to the highest, and he was right, standard tuning is B-E-A-D-G-C

Contrary to popular belief, the bass guitar and guitar ARE very different. Not note wise, but the deep phat/percussive clanky sounds a bass can make, make it much more playable for grooving. Thats why bassists who do a solo (and aren't grooving) don't keep an audience's attention. The notes and tuning are the same, but the playability is completely different. Just learned this today, through Victor Wooten. Too many bassists try to be guitar players.
The difference between a bass and guitar is what goes on in the musicians mind when playing with the band, as far as what role the instrument plays.. They can both play chords, they can both be played with a pick, they can both solo or play single notes, but a bass line is generally different than a guitar riff in some ways... sometimes they play the same thing, but it affects the band differently because they occupy different places in the sound spectrum. Bass is different.
