muay thai is good, i agree. but it's all external energy. brute force, fitness.
kung fu is both external and internal, relaxation, structure, rhythm - everything to nothing. it's completely different, and in a league of its own.

If only you guys had a school here in Melbourne. I think I'd enjoy Praying Mantis style training over Wing Chun.

@Anandfulness We tried this last year with a lot of different headgear and found even at half power most students were seeing stars or getting concussion. One student also got a perforated ear drum from a Hoon Sou so we found the only benefit would be for using headgear for semi contact sparring to avoid getting cut or having nose broken etc. But we still had to go at less then half power with a lot of control so only the more senior students were doing this as they have the control.

@wolfvasa "I wouldn't want to train there if my training partner could full-force, slap the crap out of me in training. "
Modern SPM schools implement the use of face-protection and do their strikes at full speed. The system works at all levels, only people that haven't tried it for themselves will question it's effectiveness.

I am amazed at the number of people who say "are the slaps meant to have power?" or "the slaps look weak, are they holding back?". If you notice, they are fighting real people, it is a training session, I wouldn't want to train there if my training partner could full-force, slap the crap out of me in training. Students (the lucky ones) would be recovering in hospital for days or even weeks. Anyone who asks if these guys are holding back are idiots.

@MarmarAkaSeiryu we hardly ever use kicks as we would prefer to use our legs for other things, like gripping to produce energy or moving in out etc or to get inside the stance and use our rocking energy to unbalance them at the knee level etc.
-
@aaronturnby ah! ok thank you for the reply :) i see all of the collapsing and replacing tech's and they're really fast. one last question in chow gar do you use only low kicks?
-
@MarmarAkaSeiryu They are sticking most of the time and in the cases when they are not is because they been tricked or they jumped off the person sticking arm or hand.
