This is my first experiment with film making using music and motion picture in the public domain. The video features Enrico Caruso singing "La donna e Mobile" circa 1908 and clips of films taken in New York City dating from 1898 to 1906 from the Library of Congress.

  • Wonderful video! Do you know where the location is in the video where the two roads come to a "V" shape? I guess I'm asking does that point still exist in today's NewYork?

  • Yes... Times Square! The film was taken from the top of the then newly-erected Times Building, at a height of approximately twenty stories. The clip ends looking directly north up Times Square to 46th Street, where Broadway (left) and 7th Avenue (right) diverge again.

  • Loved it. I wonder what they knew about history that we now do not.

  • that 1 dislike he must be a RE RE RE RETARD!

  • Excellent video.

Now I know where Marilyn Munroe got her hot air up the dress ( 1:56 ) idea.

RIP, to everyone filmed. God bless them all.

  • all the people in this video are dead

  • @marcsmith8 There are 2 V-shape intersections. The V-shape building at the beginning of the clip appears to be the corner where Broadway and Fifth Avenue cross 23rd Street at Madison Square. It is still there and Sprint leases the street level as a phone sales office. The sidewalk on the left of the V was extended outward 1-2 years ago to create a cafe atmosphere. The Flatiron Building. At 1:09 the V is likely Times Square (as posted) -- although it could be Herald Square.

  • Thank U for this. Its so interesting to see...especially the last party..you can really see men's attitudes towards women back then. The man just kind of grabs her away ...forcing her

  • The policeman seems a little domineering.. WOW..my Mom would have been knocked out by one of those guys if she had lived back then! LOL!!!

  • 1:21 The cop got his baton out to harass the poor people who are trying to make a living by selling fruits.

1:38 Looks like the cop doesn't like the Jew bearded man.

  • SO GOOD.

  • LOVE IT!!!!
