Can Calvinism/Unconditional Election offer good news to the despairing sinner? Or is Arminianism better suited to encourage the despondent?

"...anyone can be part of the elect.."

Question: "Including those people whom God did not elect in eternity past? Is that what you mean?"

  • Jacob Arminius taught that election is IN Christ. Not apart or outside Christ. Calvinists read Eph. 1:4 as: "just as He chose you TO BE in Christ..."

Arminians following James Arminius counters: "No, the ground, the reason and the basis of election is being IN Christ. God seeing in eternity past that you will be IN CHRIST, chose you."

Many Calvinist chop off "IN CHRIST" when talking about election. They have a habit of saying: "God chose me."

  • unconditional election makes God Willy Wonka

  • That fact that people respond to the gospel is because God elected beforehand that they would. People don't have to go though life wondering if they are part of God's elect. They're response to the gospel determines that, however that response is a result of God's sovereign will.

  • Your misrepresentation of election doesn't make it good news to lost sinner. Unconditional election is good news because anyone can be part of the elect regardless of a person's background and history. But you don't leave it there, if a person responds to the gospel, believes in the Lord Jesus Christ, that is the assurance the are elect. God has worked in them through to power of the Holy Spirit to submit to God's call to salvation, thus overcoming man's fallen nature to rebel against God.

  • @Hello1689 why shouldn't it be you act as if God has NO emotion except maybe hate. We are made in His image we share His emotions especially when others attack His very Character as a Loving God who has given ALL men a chance and you attack this is say He is not this way. Great news??? for who? YOU why do you think you are of the elect?? You think your family members are of the elect to? your children? God is JUST thats right He is and your believe is NOT JUSTICE.

  • As a Calvinist, I think both groups, Arminian and Calvinist, have many things in common and we need to learn to work together. We are both Christians. Note: These are the only Bible Based theology groups.

  • Is Calvinism scriptural? I think so.

To Allah belongs the sovereignty of the heavens and the earth: He forgives whom He wills, and He punishes

    whom He pleases. (Quran 4:61)

He whom Allah guides is he who is rightly guided, but whom he leads astray, those are the losers… They have hearts with

which they do not comprehend, they have eyes with which they do not see, they have ears with which they do not hear…

    (Qur’an:178-79)

Of course, that would require different scriptures...

  • @Hello1689 If God has already predtermined who can believe and who cannot, then only "some" have the ability to believe the gospel. At best, you can tell the unbeliever that they "could be" among God's elect. How is that "Great news" to the one whom God has reprobated?
