I too think, this thing goes backwards. The hole under the valve is the inlet, so to not waste steam on the bearings too, and to not keep the upper part under unnecessary pressure. Which means if steam comes in from that direction, then it would push the piston in the opposing direction in which it moves now. As of now this thing is working as a compressor. There is nothing wrong with the demo unit, it just needs to be turned in the opposing direction.

Old slidevalves tended to be more prone to wear, and had high recoprocating mass, so they had difficulties with high RPM engines. That is why most modern engines uses springloaded valves.
