Butirka Prison break up to date nightmare

There were two consecutive escapes from well-known Butirka prison in Moscow, which is 200 years old and needs serious repairs. First to escape were three men from the same cell. All were serving life sentences, as we have stopped executions. They managed to escape by digging through the floor of the dilapidated prison and emerging into a tunnel that led them to freedom.
There seems to be a whole network of tunnels and passages on several levels under Butirka that have existed for ages. Some of the passages were for various pipelines and sewers. What surprised many was that no one had ever examined or checked the cells. While they were digging, they simply concealed the hole with a rag. Very shortly thereafter, two of the three were caught in a forest near Moscow, where they were living in a makeshift shelter.

No sooner had they been caught than we read about another escapee, also from Butirka. This time the convict got out by showing a document that he was an official of the Prison Administration of the Russian Federation. Three prison officials have been punished. It seems that the desire for freedom knows no bounds, and people don't only get false documents or dig tunnels.

as a former corrections officer, if us prisons were like this they would kill each other. the prison would be held responsible. in other countrys they don't care if they kill each other. i do think they should bring back the old southern style chain gangs.

These men have not been found guilty of *anything*! They are awaiting trial.
